In January's winter transfer window, Manchester United has yet to make any signings or clearances. However, the first player set to leave United during the winter window is becoming increasingly clear: compared to Rashford, Casemiro, and Garnacho, it is Anthony who is closest to departing. On January 17th, multiple media outlets including Spain's Marca and Britain's Daily Mail reported that Manchester United and Betis are accelerating the loan deal for Anthony.

The 24-year-old Anthony is considered one of the worst signings in Manchester United's history. In the summer of 2022, United spent a hefty sum of 95 million euros fixed plus 5 million euros variable to bring Anthony from Ajax. Over the course of two and a half years at United, Anthony has never proven his worth. In the 2024-25 season, Anthony made only 13 appearances for United, scoring just 1 goal, with no goals in 7 Premier League matches.

Under Amorim, Anthony has had no opportunities. Leaving United to find playing time is the best choice for Anthony. Marca revealed that La Liga's Betis is pushing for the loan deal for Anthony.

Last December, Betis contacted United to discuss the loan of Anthony, and by the end of December, Betis had submitted an offer, hoping to secure Anthony on loan during the winter window. United is willing to loan out Anthony but hopes that Betis will increase the loan fee and take on more of the salary. Spanish media reported that Betis is preparing to submit a second offer in hopes of quickly completing the loan deal for Anthony.

The key issue being discussed between Betis and United is Anthony's salary. At United, Anthony earns a weekly wage of 200,000 pounds, ranking fifth in the team. Calculated, Anthony's pre-tax annual salary is 12 million euros, requiring a salary expenditure of 6 million euros for a half-year loan. For Betis, this is a significant burden, considering their highest-paid player, Isco, has a pre-tax annual salary just over 6 million euros.

Renowned Premier League journalist Ben Jacobs reported that Betis hopes United will cover most of Anthony's salary to facilitate the loan. Sky Sports pointed out that United is willing to cover 10% of the salary, and Betis' second offer is likely to complete the final loan deal.

For Anthony, playing in La Liga is very attractive. Betis' midfield features players like Isco, Lo Celso, Vitor Roque, and Abde, who favor close ball control, which aligns well with Anthony's preferences. If Anthony performs well at Betis, the two clubs will discuss a permanent transfer.
