Rockets' Seven Newcomers as Non-tradable Assets Ranking! Thompson Rises to First, Ison Due to Injury After Smith

The Houston Rockets have exceeded expectations this season with a record of 25 wins and 12 losses, ranking second in the Western Conference and highly competitive in the entire league. They have transformed from a rebuilding team to one of the top contenders.

The Rockets' success this season is largely attributed to their draft picks over the past few years, showcasing Stone's keen eye for talent.

However, the Rockets have accumulated seven young, talented players over four years, which could lead to significant pressure during contract renewals. The team must prioritize which players to retain. Among these seven players, who is least likely to be traded, and who faces the highest risk?

Seventh: Whitmore

Whitmore's position might have been higher among fans just half a month ago. However, his recent emotional outbursts, negative comments about himself and the team, conflicts with teammates, and concerns about his attitude, emotional intelligence, and basketball IQ have increased the likelihood of his departure, possibly by the mid-season trade deadline.

Sixth: Shepherd

Shepherd's performance suggests he should have been traded earlier, but his high emotional and basketball intelligence make him valuable. The Rockets recognize that his lackluster performance is partly due to insufficient opportunities, so they are not in a rush to let go of this promising point guard known as "Little Curry."

Fifth: Ison

Ison's defensive prowess is among the best in the league, yet his ranking is lower than expected. Prior to his injury, he would have ranked in the top three. Now, if the Rockets acquire a superstar player, Ison might be part of the trade package. However, the team should exercise caution before trading away such a valuable defensive asset.

Fourth: Smith

Smith's talent is undeniable, but his growth has been slow. His versatility, three-point shooting, and defense make him an attractive asset. Two factors contribute to his less impressive stats: the need to improve physicality and offensive skills, and limited playing time under Coach Udoka. Regardless, the Rockets are unlikely to let Smith go easily.

Third: Green

Green is the team's leading scorer this season, averaging 27.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2 assists, 1.2 steals, and 0.8 blocks per game, with an impressive 4.2 three-pointers. He is crucial in clutch situations and is considered the team's future top scorer. Unless an irresistible offer comes along, the Rockets are not considering trading Green.

Second: Shenjing

Shenjing's ranking seems too high
; he would fit better after Ison. His style doesn't align well with the Rockets, and his defense is lacking. Offensively, he can be inconsistent and struggles to maintain energy for over 30 minutes. Fans believe he should be traded for a stronger defensive player, but within the organization, Shenjing is highly regarded, making him at least a top-two priority.

First: Thompson

Last season, Thompson was commendable but not untouchable. This season, however, his performance makes him a non-negotiable asset, possibly even exempt from trade discussions. Although currently a reserve, he is projected to be the first choice for the starting lineup next season. Thompson's contributions on both ends of the court are invaluable, and the team views him as a potential superstar.

These rankings reflect the team's perspective, but fans may have a different order: Whitmore, Shepherd, Shenjing, Smith, Green, Ison, Thompson.
