On the morning of January 5th, Beijing time, the last warm-up match before the Australian Open, the 2025 WTA500 Adelaide Open qualifying round continued. Chinese tennis player Wang Xinyu defeated Russia's Lashimova 2:0 and advanced to the first round of the main draw.
Wang Xinyu is currently ranked 37th in the world, while her opponent is ranked 60th. The two have met twice before, with Lashimova winning both times, but those matches were played before 2022 when Wang Xinyu's world ranking was still outside the top 100.
In the first set, Wang Xinyu broke her opponent's serve in the first game after wasting a game point. Both players then held their own serve, with Wang Xinyu leading 5:3 after eight games. In the ninth game, the opponent led 40:0 and had a game point, but Wang Xinyu won six consecutive points to break her opponent's serve and take the first set 6:3.
In the second set, Wang Xinyu's morale soared as she broke and held serve to take a 3:0 lead. After both players held their own serve, Wang Xinyu led 4:1. In the sixth game of the opponent's serve, the two sides engaged in a prolonged struggle, with Wang Xinyu ultimately breaking serve for a commanding 5:1 lead. She then successfully held her own serve to win the second set 6:1 and advance to the main draw with a 2:0 victory.
Wang Xinyu is also the only Chinese player to reach the main draw at the Adelaide station, with previous Chinese players Zheng Saisai and Guo Hanyu having been eliminated in the first round of the qualifying tournament.
